256. 訳文がすっきりしないので、ゾンマー訳を含め3種類の英訳を訳してみたが、何れも納得行かない。
佐藤先生の解釈に従うと、本条は
「彼その義務を果たせずにあれば、その畑に牛代りに置くべし。」
となるようだ。考えてみれば刑務所など存在しない当時、『懲役』は家畜扱いとして執行されたのかもしれない。
256. 彼の村、その負担受けずに於ては、小作農は牛共々、その畑に配置さる（仕事につく）べし。
If his community will not pay for him, then he shall be placed in that field with the cattle (at work).
256. 小作農その義務を果たせずにあれば、牛と共にその畑に捨て置かるべし。
If he be not able to meet his obligation, they shall leave him in that field with the cattle.(Harper translation)
256. [罰金払えぬに於て]彼の町が肩代わりしようともせぬならば、小作農はその農場に牛に混ざり置かるべし。
