237. 貸舟難破の補償
やけに船乗りに厳しい気もするが、水運が命綱であった当時の事情があるとも思える。
237. 人が、雑穀・衣類・油・ナツメヤシ・その他必需品届ける船及び船乗り雇ふに於て、船乗りが不注意から難破を招き、中の物ささほうさにしをつては。かの船乗り、難破せる船及び台無しに為せる積荷全てを補償すべし。
If a man hire a sailor and his boat, and provide it with corn, clothing, oil and dates, and other things of the kind needed for fitting it: if the sailor is careless, the boat is wrecked, and its contents ruined, then the sailor shall compensate for the boat which was wrecked and all in it that he ruined.
237. dates:ナツメヤシの実は砂糖なしで甘いドライフルーツになり、これを専らデーツと呼び流通する。
contents:文脈に従えば「積荷」、しかし平板。
ruined:「台無しにした」とか訳すべきか。「しっちゃかめっちゃか」の意で、割と最近までは「ササホウサにしよった」と言ったのだが、いつの間にか方言または古拙な表現とされているようだ。
