226 - 227. 下男下女の印
226. 床屋が、その主人の知らぬうちに、下男下女の印を売られざる下男下女から剃り落とすなら、床屋は両手を刎ねらるべし。
If a barber, without the knowledge of his master, cut the sign of a slave on a slave not to be sold, the hands of this barber shall be cut off.
227. 何人も、床屋を欺き、売られざる下男下女に下男下女の印を付けしむに及んでは、死を賜り、その家に埋められるべし。床屋誓ふべきは「私は故意に印を付けなかった」と、然る程に無罪となるべし。
If any one deceive a barber, and have him mark a slave not for sale with the sign of a slave, he shall be put to death, and buried in his house. The barber shall swear: "I did not mark him wittingly," and shall be guiltless.
cut the sign of a slave：床屋で付け外しできる下男下女の印とは何か、具体的には解っていない。床屋は外科医の起源でもあるところから、刺青説もあるが、刺青は剃り落とせない。床屋なのだから、特定の髷のようなものか。バールのようなものが髪留めにでもなったのだろうか。
cut とあるのは、原文では「切り落とす」ではなく「剃り落とす」になっているそうで、首輪とかなら「外す」だろうし、持ち主の家紋を彫った装身具でも有ったのか。
